Hair Extension Aftercare Resources

Your Hair Kartel installation is an investment in the way you look and feel. Consistent at-home care protects your natural hair, keeps your extensions soft and beautiful, and helps you enjoy your transformation for as long as possible.

Your essential routine: cleanse gently, detangle daily, protect your hair at night, keep products away from attachment points, and return for maintenance on schedule.

Daily Care Essentials

  • Brush gently two to three times daily, beginning at the ends and working upward.
  • Support the attachment area with one hand while brushing with the other.
  • Separate K-Tip bonds or Micro-Link rows gently with your fingers each day to prevent matting near the scalp.
  • Use lightweight, extension-safe moisture on the mid-lengths and ends only.
  • Never go to bed with wet or damp hair.

Washing Your Extensions

Wash as needed for your scalp and lifestyleโ€”typically once or twice weekly. Excessive washing can dry the extension hair, while waiting too long may allow oil and product buildup around the attachments.

  1. Detangle completely before entering the shower.
  2. Keep your head upright and allow the water to flow downward. Avoid flipping your hair over.
  3. Apply sulfate-free shampoo to the scalp in sections. Massage gently with your fingertips; do not scrub, twist, or bunch the bonds.
  4. Let the lather rinse through the lengths rather than rubbing them together.
  5. Apply conditioner from the mid-lengths to the ends, keeping it away from K-Tip bonds and Micro-Link beads.
  6. Rinse thoroughly. Product left near the scalp can cause buildup, irritation, or slippage.

Drying

Gently squeeze out excess water and blot with a microfiber towel. Do not rub or wrap the hair tightly. Dry the attachment area completely using low-to-medium heat, directing airflow downward. The lengths may air-dry after the roots and attachment points are fully dry.

Nighttime Protection

  • Brush and separate the attachments before bed.
  • Place the hair in one or two loose braids or a low, loose ponytail.
  • Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase or wear a breathable silk or satin bonnet.
  • Never sleep with wet hair; this is one of the most common causes of matting and tangling.

Heat Styling

Apply heat protectant to the lengths before using hot tools. Use the lowest effective temperature and limit repeated passes. Keep flat irons, curling irons, and direct high heat away from K-Tip bonds, Micro-Link beads, and the scalp. Excessive heat can dry the extension hair and weaken attachment points.

Products to Use

  • Sulfate-free, moisturizing shampoo
  • Lightweight conditioner and extension-safe mask
  • Light leave-in conditioner on the lengths only
  • Heat protectant before every hot-tool service
  • A small amount of lightweight serum on the ends

Products and Habits to Avoid

  • Heavy oils, waxes, butters, silicone buildup, or conditioner on the attachment points
  • Clarifying or high-alcohol products unless your Hair Kartel stylist recommends them
  • Aggressive brushing, teasing near the scalp, or pulling the extensions into very tight styles
  • Home removal, household tools, glue, or online removal methods
  • Bleaching, coloring, or chemical services without consulting your extension specialist

Working Out, Swimming, and Vacation Care

Secure your hair in a braid or low ponytail before exercise and dry perspiration around the attachment area afterward. Before swimming, wet the hair with clean water, apply a light leave-in product to the lengths, and braid it securely. After swimming, rinse immediately and wash when appropriate. Chlorine, salt water, and sunscreen can dry or discolor extension hair, so avoid prolonged exposure and never leave the hair wet in a bun.

Professional Maintenance

Maintenance timing depends on your natural growth, installation method, density, and home-care routine. Keep every recommended appointment so your stylist can assess your scalp, remove shed hair, correct tangling, and protect the integrity of your natural hair. Do not postpone an appointment when attachments feel loose, uncomfortable, or unusually visible.

K-Tip clients

Book the follow-up and removal or reinstallation schedule recommended during your service. Never attempt to slide, cut, crush, or dissolve a bond at home.

Micro-Link clients

Return for move-up appointments on the schedule your stylist provides. Do not tighten or reposition beads yourself.

When to Contact Hair Kartel

Contact us promptly if you experience persistent discomfort, scalp irritation, excessive slipping, visible matting, unusual shedding, or an attachment that feels loose. Early support can prevent a small concern from becoming a larger issue.

Slipping or a loose attachment

A small amount of natural shedding or occasional slippage may occur, but repeated movement should be professionally assessed. Avoid pulling the extension and contact us for guidance.

Tangling or matting

Stop brushing aggressively. Support the attachment area, separate the hair gently with your fingers, and apply a small amount of detangling product to the lengths. Contact us if the tangle is close to the scalp or does not release easily.

Dry or dull extensions

Reduce heat, add moisture to the lengths, and avoid layering heavy products. Your stylist can help determine whether the hair needs hydration, clarification, trimming, or professional treatment.

Itching or scalp discomfort

Persistent itching, redness, sores, or pain should not be ignored. Stop using any new product that may be causing irritation and contact Hair Kartel. Seek medical guidance when appropriate.

Protect Your Investment

Beautiful extensions require teamwork. We provide a customized installation and professional guidance; your daily routine preserves the result. When in doubt, ask before experimenting.
